Remember when the leather cube was popular? No? Maybe just in our house. I haven't known what to do with them since our move. So, they sat, not matching anything, in a corner.

I got a creative bug this weekend and decided to try to cover them. I always thought you couldn't cover leather because it is slippery. Well, I decided an ottoman is an exception to that rule (is it a rule?). I found THE EASIEST guide here. I even surprised myself when they came out so well. I should have done this a long time ago.

The fabric is Annie Selke's Link Slate. I may have to make pillows with the leftover fabric. Try it folks. You will impress your friends.

30 Day Diet

I followed the Spring around like a groupie last month. If you start in the south and slowly work your way up, you can have a month of perfect weather and wisteria blossoms. I love witnessing earth's big yawn from hibernation and watching the people slowing defrost from a cold winter of being cooped up inside. I miss this most about living up North. I miss the big smiles us runner's and dog walkers would exchange. That knowing look of huge appreciation to be able to just breathe again. The sun followed me to Boston last week and I got to see all of this again. It was great!!

I'm back in the house and avoiding unpacking. I'm hoping the closets will unpack themselves or the contents will just disappear; I clearly did not need them anyway. I don't even know what to wear. There are too many options now. I need to simplify. I need to purge. I need a house detox. I'm thinking this:

Laminated Fabrics

Jenny from LGN posted about Amy Butler's house on Apartment Therapy recently and it got me thinking about fabrics again. I headed over to Amy Butler's site and was so happy to see that she offers laminated fabric for some of her patterns. This is the best kid-friendly, spill-proof solution for eating areas. I was lucky enough to find pre-treated Christopher Farr fabric on ebay and used it to upholster our kitchen chairs. We have put it to the test many times and everything wipes right up.

Amy's fabrics are very affordable.

I'm loving the third fabric from the left with the large turquoise circles. I didn't see it on the site so I emailed her company to ask. Anyone see it anywhere?

I still remember kicking myself for not getting the fabric she had on her couch. It was from Ballard Designs and was on sale for $15 a yard. I got the swatch and loved it and then dragged my feet. Then: Sold Out! Why don't they bring back fabrics that were such an obvious win?

I fell in love with these His and Her planters featured on Secrets of A Stylist a few months ago. There is no way I could/would pay $300 for planters.

I popped into the Ballard Design Outlet on our way home from Scott Antique Show last weekend and spotted this for $19.95 (slightly damaged)

She is actually a lot cooler looking in person and I think a few succulents sprouting from her head will give her some character. Perhaps a coat of high gloss white....or not. Very cha cha cha chia, right? (BTW, who knew one could own an Obama chia pet? And even better, you have the choice of his facial expression!)

I was really bummed that I missed Brimfield Antique Market last week. I plan on going to the July show, but needed to get my fill before that. Lo and behold, we happened to finally be in Atlanta when Scott Antique Market was open.

I was prepared for fields of stalls, but was greeted with 2 smallish buildings and a few tents outside. It was very manageable for a day trip and I liked a lot of the vendors better than Brimfield. At Scott, you don't find a lot of sellers with the same thing and many of the items are unique, reclaimed pieces. While I love a good treasure hunt, I was happy to see styled booths and edited pieces in some sections. I read Eddie Ross' article in the NY Times prior to my visit and really tried to heed his sage advice.

I fell in love with this horse head right off the bat, but was unwilling to pay $250. I didn't get a feel that the seller was much of a bargainer. Mr. Ed was about 2 feet tall and would have looked amazing hanging about the fireplace.....

There were a lot of Union Jacks floating around. Inspiration from the recent wedding no doubt.

If I ever find myself living in a loft, I'd like to fill it with things like this:

I really like the black background pull down chart art that has been popping up everywhere.

I was thisclose to purchasing these awesome hand blown drinking glasses, but it came with a set of salad plates that I didn't like. I could have talked myself into them, but after packing our house 2x in a year I have become very good at walking away from stuff we don't need.

I had visions of creating an Eddie Ross tablescape and then had to remind myself that we don't do dinner parties anymore.

All this flea marketing has got me wanting more. Next stop? NY's Antiques Garage sometime this summer.

Living Like It Is 1999

I know people had cellphones and used the internet obsessively prior to 1999, but I don't recall them being a huge part of my life until the 21st century. Ah those were the days.....

Anywho, we just got back from our 12 day visit to Hilton Head, SC. I had limited cell reception and zero wireless service. It took some getting used to, but I have decided that it is the only way to vacation. Now I just have to figure out a way to disconnect my husband's phone and computer, too. His worked, mine didn't.

Things I took away from our trip:

79 degrees, 42 % humidity, with zero clouds is the perfect weather
Paddleboarding is the best way to start the day. Kayaking is the best way to end it.
I can never get tired of looking at water

Lastly, WE NEED TO REDECORATE!

I took some photos of the house we stayed in. This place was AMAZING. I am still contemplating sharing them on here. There are few things in life that are sacred anymore and I think kids and homes should be left private. Since this home belongs to a family friend, I feel especially torn. However, the owner is an interior decorator and it belongs in a magazine. She got every room right. She must feel so satisfied when she walks through her home. Ok, we know that isn't true. Aren't we always searching for something else to make it "perfect"?

Life In The Fast Lane....

Well, life hasn't slowed down here at the Knowles house. Between packing up the house, turning 33, finding a new tenant for the carriage house, having house guests, and finding time to go to the beach, this month has flown by.

Sunday we will be vacating our house in Charleston and handing it over to a Spoleto opera director for the month. We will take refuge in Hilton Head for a bit, head to Atlanta for a while, skip over to Birmingham, AL for a weekend (and hope to see a new baby), and fly to Boston to round it all out. Hopefully Quinn still likes to travel.

Tell me, is your house rent-ready? How long would it take you to clean out the closets? And where would you put it all?

I'll take pics of the rooms before we go so you can get a final tour of the house while it is clean. For now, look what I made on Monday:

I bought the cork board here. I wanted huge and this delivers (literally. ha!). The burlap is from a local store. I'm not posting instructions because they are all over the blogosphere. I eyeballed the nailheads along the thin metal trim. Not perfect, but didn't take as long as a time as it looks. Only 300 nailheads later...... I am very good at zoning out and getting it done these days.

I hope all my southern friends are safe from the storms. Scary stuff. Mother Nature is very angry. Hmm, I wonder why?

Hi there. It's me. I am alive. I don't have much to say. My excuses are futile. I HAVE been thinking a lot about all the packing I have to do. We have to vacate the premises in 18 days to make way for some fancy opera director and her family to call this place home. We moved in here only 6 months ago and yet there is so much stuff....Luckily, we have a lot of closets. Closets that will soon have locks on them :)

Anywho, I thought I'd share 2 new blogs with you. This is what I'm doing when I should be packing.....

Emily Henderson - Yes, I talk about her way too much lately. Girl crush? Maybe. She talks a lot about her episodes in recent posts, but if you have the patience to scroll through the older posts to before the show aired, you'll find some awesome flea market finds, etc. She is one witty gal. We could have very interesting conversations speaking in abbreviations. I think she is totes adorbes.

Things That Make You Go Hmmmm.....

How many times do you find yourself watching HGTV or something of the like and ask yourself how does one get on this show and get all this awesome free stuff (and, really, what is free)?. I'd say a lot.

When we first decided to move and bought a house without yet selling our house, then went through the process of selling our house on our own, moved 985 miles away from family and friends and started a complete gut renovation...oh, did I mention I was 7 months pregnant at the time?...I toyed with the idea of entering to be on one of the HGTV shows. With all that on our plate, I figured we could be pretty entertaining. I consulted the list of shows seeking potential "guests" (their words), but none interested me and I was afraid my raging hormones may make me "appear" crazy. Still, I always wondered what could have been.

Now we can get a little insider scoop on what it is like to be a guest on HGTV thanks to Joy over at Oh Joy!. She and her husband were lucky enough to be chosen for my latest obsession, Secrets of a Stylist. Who knew you had to audition for months? I'm still curious what kind of budget you have to cough up for it, but it is pretty cool that you get design and labor for free.

It totally stinks that they cut out the part about her wallpaper line. Hello people, you USED it in their living room!!! Would have been an amazing plug....Anywho, read on for the details.

I was waiting to post my recap for you guys until the episode was online for those of you without TV's or who didn't get to see it live. So check it out right here if you haven't watched it yet. Then, all the bits below will make much more sense!

So you might wonder what it's like to have your house made over on a reality show...well, it's pretty awesome! Here's a little recap and behind-the-scenes bits for you of how it all went down. I had known of Emily's styling work previously to her being on Design Star but we had never met. Once I saw the pilot episode of her new show, I emailed her a fan letter and asked if she was available for consulting because I loved her show and needed help. Her show was the first on HGTV that I really felt fit our style and if anyone could give some good advice, she could. She was too busy to consult, but she was like, "Why don't you audition for the show and then I'd get to style your place for free?!?". My ears perked up and so I got Bob to film this audition tapewith me. We sent it in, and soon after started the process of going through rounds of casting from August-October of last year. When we finally got the call that we were in, we were told we'd be shooting a month later and filmed our episode at the end of November.

During the casting process, we met with Emily a couple times to talk about our own individual styles as well as our combined styles and what love our space to become. We sent her some tear sheets of things we liked. While I tend to be very type A and want to be in charge, I really let Emily do her thing because I love her work and trusted her 100%. And, Bob, well, he's easy so there were no concerns there. Here's what our living room & dining room looked like before...

When the week of filming came, we moved out for the week and rented a temporary apartment nearby. The crew works long hours filming in the house, so especially since we have cats, we thought it would be easier for everyone involved if we just moved out for the week and took our furry friends with us. The show shoots from Monday-Saturday with 3 days that we had to be available for filming.

On the first day of filming, we gave Emily an overview of our space, what we needed help with, and a bit about our styles.

We went to Emily's studio to film the "Style Diagnostic" in which she has us choose between different objects to get a sense of our style through our choices. The funny part about this segment is that the two shoes I picked for Bob were actually his! We didn't see the objects ahead of time {they must have pulled some of his shoes from our house}, so we were laughing on the inside when I had to pick what he'd like...knowing that was an easy job for me! None of the girl's shoes were mine, so Bob had a tougher task...

Then, she gave us our diagnosis and told us about the plan to start with my Artsy Nouveau look, and then layer on Bob's Single Malt Minimalism for a hybrid of Single Malt Nouveau. Now, here's where she warns us that she might go a little over the top with the girlie, feminine stuff and then tone it back down with Bob's style later.

Emily, Orlando, and the team then proceed with the first look. I love this scene here where she's standing in a corner with full-on wallpaper! So cute. {Because no one puts Baby in the wallpapered corner!} And yes, this is from my wallpaper line. We did talk about that on the show but it got cut for time sake. They then proceeded to put together Artsy Nouveau...

This was the expression on our faces. Don't we look scared? I was probably the most flustered as I didn't know something so feminine could exist. And that while I loved parts of it, on a whole it was too feminine even for me {and definitely for Bob}.

Emily explains how she wanted to bring in a huge dose of "Joy" and then pare it down and add some of "Bob" in the next look. We were relieved that she wasn't going to leave it that way and excited to see the balance of our two styles in the second look.

I loved this segment about how Emily placed our artwork on the wall in a pretty cluster. That paper trick is awesome and something I totally need to do going forward. They then did their magic, and here's the 2nd and final look...

...which we LOVED! It was {and still is} a great mix of both Bob and my style. Emily paired down some of the girlieness and brought in more wood, chrome, and streamlined shapes that felt more modern and more like Bob...and a look which felt much more livable to me than the previous one.

Can you see the smiles on our faces?!? Totally. Relieved. And so so happy!

Purple Passion

It seems like all the tress down here got the memo that it is Spring. We didn't move down here until May last year so I am not familiar with the amazing blossoms in March. Wisteria is EVERYWHERE. It makes me wish we incorporated it into our landscaping.....and then I see all the bees it attracts. No thank you. I like bees, just not near my kid :)

It is not surprising that I fell in love with this bedroom in the recent Ballard Designs catalog:

There is something about purple and gold that I love. And purple and green, and purple and pink, and purple and plum, and purple and black......

I think I'm going to have to bring this into the master bedroom. Just when I think my projects are coming to an end, another idea comes up. What is on your project list?

I love these high backed slipcovered chairs. They would make awesome head chairs for a dining room. What did Emily from Secrets of a Stylist say in her latest episode? Keep it low profile for casual and high profile for drama? I think this is the perfect blend...high profile for the formality of a dining room (or, why not a kitchen?) yet slipcovered for that casual feel. I am a sucker for grey, but the close-up view online looks questionable, almost velvety. I'm curious. If anyone buys this,let me know how it looks.

BEFORE: Dirt area between our house and the carriage house

I can't even call it a "patio:before". This photo was taken right when we bought the place. Imagine all the construction debris that piled there and wasn't quite hauled off as promised.....

The hardscapers cleared and leveled it:

And started in with the herringbone pattern:

We still need to paint the fence, buy a grill, sew a new cushion and pillows for the couch, plant things in the built-in flower bed, and style the area, but we're happy relaxing out here. And, thankfully, the neighbors can no longer see into the yard from their deck :)

Sidenote: That is a rinnai on the side of our house (left). Environmentally friendly doesn't always mean pretty (or fast), but it does the job. The beast of an HVAC is hidden behind the fence, along with myriad beach chairs and perhaps my future bike :)

Sorry for the lack of posts lately. I've been busy being obsessed with the Barre class at my gym, making yummy meals for Quinn on the amazingly easy Beaba babycook, reading food blogs and learning new, fun recipes for the adult meals, watering our new grass 2x a day, enjoying the 70-80 degree weather, going to kids' birthday parties with jump castles, eating lots of ice cream, and it's not even April yet.........

This weather is making me want to go for a bike ride. All the kids in this town have really cool beach cruiser/old school wheels. Some have drink holders, others are decked out with bumper stickers. Now I know how they can afford it:

Much better than the $399 version at Urban Outfitters and don't get me started on the $$$$$ other options. Yikes! This makes me very happy. Now we just have to figure out where to store it where it won't get stolen :(

I'm having a hard time publishing my post about a new bike that I want when one of my favorite countries is dealing with such loss right now. I had the pleasure of visiting Tokyo and Hakone for work a few years ago and it has had a place in my heart every since. To watch people who take such pride in balance, efficiency, and cleanliness deal with such chaos is gut wrenching.

Before And After: Driveway

I think 90% of home renovation budgets eat up the little portion set aside for landscaping. And it is a HUGE mistake. You spend all your time/money/patience making the inside look great, but no one can tell the difference unless they are invited inside.

Every time I walked up to our house it felt kind of depressing. We were still stuck with this:

This picture doesn't even do it justice. Gravel is not fun for strollers or anyone who likes nature. It is good for hoarding cigarette butts (from old tenants) and little bits of trash. Yuck.

There were a lot of variables to consider with this area. Do we need a permit? How do we pitch the yard to help with flooding (the city of Charleston is below sea level). Do we remove the gravel or use it as a layer? It all seemed so complicated.

Now that the weather is consistently beautiful (I'll kick myself for jinxing it) we knew we just had to bite the bullet and call in the experts. This took place over 3 hours yesterday morning:

I can't wait to watch the boxwoods grow and smell the fragrant tea olive trees as they bloom. A fence will be constructed tomorrow to separate the yard from the parking area (in front of car in 2nd pic). Picture the grass green and luscious and insert puppy :)

Oy! Now we have to worry about watering and cutting the grass!

I'm calling in early this week. My parents are visiting this weekend. I can't wait!

Passing fad or fab staple, whatever your theory is on the cowhide rug, you can have the look for less. I looked at the IKEA selection last month and they were all too dark for me.....black and deep browns. I was so happy to finally find light grays and tans at my local World Market yesterday (colors are better at the store than they are online).

I think it would feel better under Quinn's soon-to-be mobile knees than the current sisal roughness.

World Market ships, but it is better to pick these out in person.

Headboard Fabric Poll

Our weekend was filled with walks and iced coffee and swingsets so the headboard did not get done. It occurred to me that I don't even have fabric for the project.....duh!

The bold colors are a drastic departure from the rest of the house (minus the nursery), but remember I am embracing the Ms. PacMan machine. Too much?

I've always loved this DIY video from Design Sponge. She explains all the steps so well and the finished product looks exactly like her inspirational photo. I wish I could figure out how to cut that shape without hiring a carpenter. I'm not confident I could freehand the curves and then I'd have a lot of curved edges to upholster.

I love the otomi fabric, but it will clash too much with my blue ikat chairs in the guest room (see second pic below). I'm thinking it is best to just work with the Ms. PacMan machine. She is a beast, but pink is in this year right?

Material Girls and Little Green Notebook have blogged about some great shaped headboards. If I want this done quick and easy (always my MO) then I should stick with plain old square (snooze). I'll have to dress it up with some fun fabric. Luckily, hubster is on spring break next week. Looks like we'll have another Weekend Warrior project to help this situation (so embarrassing):

Before And After: Cane Back Chairs

I bought these chairs at Brimfield Antique Market 2 summers ago (mark your calendar: 2011 dates are May 10-15, July 12-17, Sept 6-11). I didn't know it at the time, but they are a great match to my cane back dining chairs. I got a 2 for 1 deal since they double as living room chairs and host chairs at the dining table.

I'm loving the gray faux ostrich skin fabric. Kid friendly, renter friendly, and still chic. And I can officially report that I love the white slip cover couch I got a few months ago. I was mattress shopping the other day (boring!) and came across the perfect mirror for the entry way.

I remembered it from Lonny Magazine a few months ago.

But for $125, I thought maybe I could make it myself.

During my research, I found that Nate Berkus did this same project and documented it with a step by step how to. Thanks Nate! Everyone is raving over your show, but I think it's horrible. Sorry :( Anyone else agree?

Get the step-by-step guide to creating a high-end rope mirror on a low budget!

A high end rope mirror can cost tens of thousands of dollars, but here’s how to make one for under $35!

What You Need
Cardboard
Sisal Rope - 1" Thick
Glue Gun
Twine
Scissors
Circular Mirror (Unframed)
Duct Tape

1. Buy a generic circular mirror without a frame. (The one shown in the demo was only $15.)

2. Make a cardboard O-shaped frame that covers the outer 2" of your mirror.

3. Take 1" sisal rope (which you can find at Home Depot for around $10) and cut one piece that spans the diameter of the frame. Tape the ends of the rope to prevent fraying.

4. Use a glue gun to attach the rope to the cardboard frame.

5. Measure another piece of sisal rope that spans the diameter of the outer-edge of the frame, with extra rope to make a loop at the top of your mirror. Tape the ends of the rope with duct tape to prevent fraying.

6. Use your glue gun to secure the top loop, and then secure the rope to the outer edge of the cardboard frame.

7. Cut a third and final piece of sisal rope to lay on top of the sisal rope base you've created. Cut your rope the length of frame diameter, and secure the edges with duct tape to prevent fraying.

8. Using your glue gun, secure your third piece of sisal rope to the top of your rope base.

9. Loop and knot a piece of twine where your sisal rope ends meet. Loop your twine around the rope 30 to 40 times to give your frame a finished look.

10. Using your glue gun, add a substantial amount of glue to the edge of your glass mirror, as well as the cardboard of your sisal rope frame. Place your rope frame on top of your circular mirror, and let it dry completely before hanging!

I put this guide to the test and have a few adjustments/suggestions if you decide to do it yourself.

I decided to try the rectangular version and headed to Walmart to look for a cheap mirror. I found it for $5!

Hi Quinn!

I had to put a weight on the loop to get it to stay put, but even that didn't work. I eventually gave it a good twist in the other direction and it cooperated.

I used the bread knife to cut the rope. A normal person could use a saw.

I suggest binding the ends section with tape before wrapping it in twine.

And, if you're still reading this very long post (thank you, Mom) here is the finished product:

It didn't come out perfect. I bought a second mirror to perfect it after I did this trial run. I will hunt down some boat rope instead of the stiff jute rope at Lowes and I will measure the cardboard better. Oh, and a very important note: don't use a colorful cardboard. The Novogratz Family Bids Bravo Goodbye and Says Hello to HGTV Show

Few parents know how to keep a home high on design like Bob and Cortney Novogratz! The stylish couple just announced that they will be moving their 9 by Design brood from Bravo to HGTV with a new series called,Home by Novogratz. The 30-minute episodes have already begun filming and will air this Summer.

According to the release, the designers will "take on residential design projects — customizing eclectic finds, turning trash to treasure, and mixing colors and textures in innovative ways" on the show. And, the seven Novogratz children — Wolfgang (Wolfie), 13, Tallulah and Bellamy, 12, Breaker, 9, Five and Holleder (Holly), 5, and Major, 2 — will also make an appearance.

Weekend Warrior

I got motivated to finally dust off the old sewing machine this weekend. It felt really good to get back at it and I owe it all to my mom for my (limited) skills. It took a few tries to remember how to load the bobbin properly and, of course, I never measured anything, but I think they came out well.

I just turned over the edges, created a pocket at the top for the curtain rod, and then hemmed it once it was hung up.

Believe me, this is the easiest project you could sew (besides pillows) so if you were ever considering new drapes give it a go!

Thank you all for your comments!! I purchased the zig zag fabric this weekend and am excited to get started. We'll be in NYC this weekend so it will be a slow moving project (but you guys should be used to that by now).

The blue ikat chairs will go back into the study once I get the white cane chairs back from the upholsterer. The Chiang Mai pillows will go in there, too. So, Martine, not to worry about patterns clashing.

Molly, I promise I'm not living in a color-less world. I have one sister who loves my white phase and one who hates it. The one who hates it likes to give me unsolicited advice :)

And, Ladies, I'll keep the sideboard :) We're too lazy to move it. Hence the old couch in the guest room/study:

Don't judge. We call this the "crap room". I've always wanted a craft room. I guess I need to enunciate when I make my wishes.

This leads me to the next survey........What do you think, should we put a bed in here for all our upcoming guests? We have the EZ Bed (totally awesome, BTW), but I think this room needs some definition. I'm dreaming of twin headboards beneath the windows. Pretty not practical. What would you do?

Side note: we may be renting out the house for 6 weeks this summer so a bed will be necessary.

I so want to add arched headers to those bookcases and paint the back a different color. I wish Jenny would hurry up and show us how it's done.

Before And After (After): Living Room 2.0

I already posted the renovation before and afters of the living room, but thought I'd show you the work in progress of furniture placement. This is the latest set up, but it changes monthly.

The ottoman looks gigantic in that picture. It kind of is, actually, but I suppose the room is kind of small, too. Do you ever wish you could take your thumb and index finger and enlarge your room like you enlarge a website or photo on your smart phone? Ugh, technology plays too much into our brains these days. Sometimes, after a particular lengthy go at Mario Cart, my husband will see an odd looking car on the road and think he is still in a race. True story.

The fireplace is proving to be a problem. We didn't make it functional because it was very expensive. But now we are left with a gaping hole that collects lots of debris and crumbling brick. Not so sure what we'll do once Quinn starts crawling.

Those ikat chairs were supposed to be the office chairs in the study. That's a whole other project to stress about before our first guests of 2011 arrive in a month.

This side board is a new addition to the room. We love it, but it really doesn't have a purpose in this house. We thought about selling it, but Craigslist is not great for selling expensive things here and I like it too much to let it go for cheap. I guess you can never have too much storage, right? The wood is too nice to paint or I'd have it in a pretty rubbed gray color. (Notice the freshly painted chairs ready to go to the upholsterer this weekend?)

This is where the burlap drapes (or the new striped fabric?) are supposed to go. The navy panels were left over from the nursery and are just too dark for the space.

Before And After: Master Bathroom

I finally feel pretty confident to show you the master bathroom "after". You'll recall that I mentioned buying a new bath mat and window shade to complete the project. It really only took those 2 things to make it pretty. I'm not sure why it took so long to get those things. Maybe I'm blind when I go in there in the wee hours of the morning and don't think about decorating.

This is what it looked like before the renovation:

We decided to switch the bathroom and the walk in closet because the closet had nice hardwood floors. Husband was against wood floors in a bathroom at first, but then I pointed out to him that we wouldn't have to spend any money on materials for the floor. He was sold after that :)

This enormous pink bra makes me laugh every time I look at it. Ah, to be a 19 year old college student again.

DURING

Living in the city, we haven't had a window in our bathroom in years. I always feel especially claustrophobic in bathrooms without windows. Disgustingly stuffy.

This is what it looked like pre bath mat and window shade. You may not be able to tell that the window hanging is comprised of an old sheer white panel and a blue sarong I bought in Costa Rica in 2000. It really brought us back to our college days. The prints leaning against the wall are a great representation of the procrastinators who still live here :)

If anyone is interested in NOT spending upwards of $100 on an over-sized bath mat (60"), Walmart is your friend.

Weekend Warrior 2.0

Remember when I was contemplating getting this fabric? Well, I got it. And this weekend the husband and I built (he) and upholstered (me) the table project I had in mind for it. I love navy blue, but really wanted something more muted for this table. Luckily, I saw my vision on the underside of the fabric. I just turned it inside out!

The area needs a mirror and a little rearranging of the accessories, but I think she is a pretty little scale of the original inspiration. Now I just have to find a metal basket. I know I saw them on the cover of one of the home catalogs this month. Any one remember?

I have found the "missing link" to the living room decor. I adventured to the fabric store for inspiration yesterday and found this for only $16.99 a yard. Granted, I went in there with hopes of finding something under $9 a yard, but I digress.

I usually like to leave the copy cat steal to Reichel over at Copy Cat Chic, but I've had my eye on these 2 items and wanted to get some feedback from you guys. While the "splurges" aren't necessarily breaking the bank, it is hard to pass up a better bargain. What do you think?

I'd love 2 of them for the office/guest room, but we always end up doing our work at the dining room table. Would the addition of this to the room make us more likely to use it?

I stumbled upon this lamp when I first went to the Jonathon Adler store on Newbury St. in Boston. It was love at first sight.....and then I saw the price tag ($425)

Could I settle for something slightly different for $139?

Cut It Out!

Anyone envisioning Dave Coulier from Full House doing his "cut. it. out" hand gesture? No? Just me? Typical.

This feature artist is a cut above the rest ;) If you haven't heard of her yet, take note. Molly Bosley is on the road to making it big. She just illustrated a cover for young adult book published by Random House. Her latest work is amazeballs (yes, I said it). The tree house series will be up on her website at the end of February and featured in an exhibit in March. I pulled some strings and got us a little preview.

The paper cuts are layered to give a 3D effect. I think they would look awesome hanging in a nursery or a living room. The whimsy and color combination appeals to all ages. The biggest ones are 12X12 and the smallest ones are 8X8 and will be priced at about $200-$300 framed.

We are so honored to have one of her pieces in Quinn's nursery.

Molly also does portrait silhouettes for about $40 unframed. She has an uncanny ability to capture the subject's whole persona in a simple image. Take a look:

This would make a great bar hutch. Terrible as is, but slap some paint on that baby and you get something very Dorothy Draper-esque.

Love this for a bookend. Of course, I'd probably spraypaint it white or gold.

The ever popular metal barstool finally appears at HomeGoods! $79 is not a great price. You can still find better on overstock.

Ballards, Burlap, Bargain....B-A-N-A-N-A-S

I did a cost benefit analysis on this and it is better to purchase these than for me to make them.
$20 in fabric + sewing + lining (more money) + headaches = not worth saving $20.

Need a simple, classic, affordable way to spruce up your windows? Ballards is having a great sale on their burlap panels. 108" for $39!! I don't like the fringe so ordered a longer length so I can just cut them off. This is a great way to switch things up without making a huge color and financial commitment. I'd love to be bold and go with a colorful pattern, but don't want to drop the cash on something I'm not sure I'll love.

Someday, I'd like to do a makeover like the "Den Do-Over" featured in Southern Living last month.

The online article doesn't show the "before" photo of the living room like the magazine does. It was dark and boring. I love how the drapes and throw pillows really livened things up. For now, I'm sticking with neutrals to maintain that beachy, classic look. Install with photos to come.......

The Little Things Make a Difference

I feel like I'm always saving money for that big item that will make all the difference in my life. But when I really think about it, it is all the little things that really keep me happy. That skinny latte from Starbucks, an $8 t-shirt from target, or a new Red Currant Votivo candle for the house. So instead of waiting to buy that chair/splurge on a hair cut/go out to that fancy dinner, I decided to spruce up all the little things around the house that I've been meaning to change.

Thanks to a few gift cards and forgotten funds in my paypal account, I bought a new bath mat for the master bathroom (it is hard to find affordable 60" mats!), a roman shade for the bathroom window (the sarong currently nailed up isn't cutting it for 2011), storage bins for my craft/linen closet (why are they so expensive even at TJ Maxx?), new drapes and throw pillows for the living room. And I finally ordered fabric for some chairs I've neglected to finish. Tomorrow I am going to frame some prints that have been accumulating.

You know what that means? I'll have some "After" pictures for you very soon :)

Putting Out An APB On Jute Braid Pillows

I have been meaning to go to Homegoods for the past 2 weeks to get baby boy a Christmas stocking. I finally made it there this weekend and they had SO MUCH good stuff I had to really restrain myself to not make unnecessary purchases. This has been a very hard skill to learn. In another life (read: pre-baby and pre-unemployment) I would have bought everything. Just because.

I've been coveting these Jute Braid pillows at Pottery Barn,

but didn't want to spend $39 for the 4 that I ~~need~~ want.

And then came across almost identical ones at Homegoods for $19.99!

I want light blue to continue my light color theme in the living room. A year ago I would have bought the ones that "kinda" met my needs and then bought new ones 2 months later because I couldn't fool myself into liking them anymore. I didn't see that color choice in the rows of pillows so decided to move on. See my progress here, people?

Then I saw it........sitting in the little boy bedding section......

However, it was not the size I wanted and it had a stain on it. Again, the old me would have purchased it. Commence the applause for my dedication.

I've always loved Alan Campbell's Zig Zag fabric, but not the price tag. I had bookmarked this similar fabric and finally got around to ordering a sample to compare the two.

Unfortunately, I only have the regular "Zig Zag" and the sample should be more appropriately compared to the "Petite Zig Zag". You can kind of get an idea of the difference in the images below.

Alan Campbell's is a beautiful blend of 55% linen / 45% cotton while Alexander Henry's Zig Zag is 100% cotton. The Zambia also has tiny turquoise dots scattered over the zig zag. If you can get past that, the much cheaper version would be a great impostor for throw pillows or window dressings.

Table Scaping

I am lucky enough to live down the street from South of Market and visit the store from time to time to drool over the merchandise. While I love everything in the store, I often find myself saying "Really?" after looking at the prices of things. $400 for a large throw pillow that isn't even double sided or have piping? I'm in the wrong business people. Well, I'm currently in NO business, but you catch my drift :)

I have seen these placemats in another store so it got me thinking that I could easily make these. If I was hosting Thanksgiving, I'd totally whip these up for an easy, simple table-scape.

How you ask? Well, I still have to put it to the test, but I'd find me some thick burlap (usually sells at fabric stores for about $1.99 a yard) and a stencil online.

Print out a large image (on stiff cardstock if you have it or, better yet, stencil paper) , cut it out, tape to the pre-cut fabric, and paint it on.

Life in the Knowles household has been hectic lately. With visitors, a cold, and a 3 night trip this month, we've had no sleep. Needless to say, I am feeling very uninspired. I'm contemplating where this blog is going now that the upholstery projects are on hold indefinitely and the renovation is over. We have no money to decorate at the moment so perhaps we'll switch gears to a few DIY/Use-what-you-got projects. I see a can of spray paint in my hand in the near future. Life is short. And goes by too quick, and no matter what... my Family always comes first.

Blogging, decorating, and my vinyl business are ways for me to help out my family, not only to make a little money for us, but also... because they make this Momma HAPPY! :)

And you know what they say... "If Momma ain't happy........" lol.

I've found something that is MINE... that I have a passion for and that also keeps me feeling GOOD!

And no. I'm not talking about the times in my week when I break down crying because my house is mess and I have 200 new emails in my inbox, or when my three year old sneaks under my desk and flips that lovely RED SWITCH, to OFF, on my computer, and I lose EVERYTHING...

(yes, this has happened twice. And I literally had to LOCK MYSELF in my bathroom for about 20 minutes, so as not to BEAT my child into her next life)

* I Create something new, that I am proud of, and get to share it!

* Finding out that you and a few thousand other ladies can relate to and feel the SAME way about things... that YOU DO!

So I guess that my answer to this question REALLY is...It's hard. Anyone who tells you different... is a liar. LOL.

There will NEVER be enough hours in the day.

Kids, church callings, a house, a husband, school, business, blog..... It's all just part of who I am, now... It's what makes me tick...

* Nobody can be the BEST at everything. I'm still working on this one, but I think I'm coming to terms with that. LOL.

- Someones house will ALWAYS look better

- Your neighbor/friend/co-worker will always make more money than you...

- And you can NEVER give ENOUGH time, attention or LOVE to your kids.... because even if you try your HARDEST, you'll almost ALWAYS feel like you could have done more.

SO... just DO YOUR BEST!... and if YOU feel good about what YOU'VE accomplished at the end of the day... then that's ALL that matters :)

As a new blogger, I am finding myself really having to set some boundaries. The other day both my kids came down with their toy computers and sat down next to me on the couch. They wanted to be like mommy. Oops. Not sure I want that to be how they view me. So now I blog when I first get up in the morning, I wake up about 45 minutes before they do and enjoy a hot cup of coffee and some alone time. Great way to start the day. I also make use of nap time. I either work on a house project or sit down at my computer. As a stay at home mom, it's nice when the husband can swoop in and take over for a bit and I find a quiet hour to myself. Everyone gains from that. Like everything, it's a major balancing act.

I didn’t blog and I limited my design projects when my children were very small, partly because they were very demanding and partly because I served as the president of my local mothers of multiples club. I take appointments while they are in preschool, but I struggle to find time to blog or actually do my design work. Right now, I stay up too late and drink too

It is a constant juggling act. I get up an hour before my son. This is my time for prayer, shower, and blogging. Its a great way to get a jump start on my day and feel refreshed. I didn't start my blog until my kids were all in school, and so I have quite a bit more "free" time than I have had for the last 11 years!

I break up the work. I like to get several posts started with the chunks of time that I have when my kids are at school. I will scan pictures, or find pictures, and then start anywhere from 3 to 10 posts. As I have time throughout out the week, I will flesh out the posts, one at a time. All appointments for consultations and other design work is done while my kids are in school. It may sound a little old fashioned, but no matter how busy I get, I always want to be there for my three children when they get home from school.

It's all about scheduling and compartmentalizing. I wake up early and work before the kids get up and I stay up late and work after they go to bed, sometimes until 2:00 or 3:00 in the morning. It's not easy to be a full time mom, a full time blogger and a full time decorator. Being a mom is the priority for me, and sadly, that's the job with the least obvious deadlines and the most flexibility. How easy is it to turn on Nick Jr and get a couple of hours of work done without having to pay a sitter? For me though, that's not the point, and I'm not happy when I find myself there. Recently we hired a part time nanny who comes in on Tuesdays and Thursdays and that is really helping me, both in my ability to get things done and in feeling more comfortable with the amount of work I am taking on. By compartmentalizing this way, I feel like I am a much more present mom during the rest of the week.

There are just too many good things to do with our 24 hours in the day. It's easy to feel guilty or frustrated or overwhelmed, but I'm getting better about taking things in stride and focusing on only the best things. My motto is 'I can't do it all, but I can do a lot.

Dining Chairs: Before And After

Well look at them now:

A few months ago I scored some Christopher Farr fabric in "Ravenna" (Julie - I don't remember the seller, sorry!) and FINALLY used it on my dining room chairs (also an ebay score). Sadly (and more frustratingly), I did not end up upholstering them myself. I attempted one, and I found myself and the living room knee deep in foam, staples, and very sharp upholstery tools. NOT a great environment for a 3 month old. Will I EVER get my own workshop?? (Now I feel like I need to go read Virginia Woolf)

Canada Is Really Bringing It, Eh

Canada has really got it going on. They filled a lot of gaps (RIP Domino) with their sustaining shelter magazines, gave us HGTV, and introduced us to Sarah Richardson. Sarah's House (or as my husband calls it, Sarah's Hoose) is so fun to watch, although I still don't quite understand what she does with the houses she renovates or how she makes a profit.

Now meet Christine. She lives in Toronto and recently contacted me about purchasing my Christopher Farr fabric. Since I never used it, I was happy to give it a new home. After she described where she wanted to use the fabric in her house (Chiang Mai Dragon, Imperial Trellis, David Hicks "La Fiorentina"...) I HAD to see pictures. Let me preface this by telling you she has 3 kids and a "large" dog......There is hope for my white couch yet!

This chair is covered in faux ostrich skin making it very durable to sticky kid fingers. Brilliant! I will steal this idea for my chairs.

I love this look. It will take a lot of wood to fill up our fireplace, but I love the rustic look it will bring to the room. Now - if I could only find that Moroccan rug somewhere for cheap. Buying Cabinet Hardware At A Clothing Store...

sounds like a dumb idea when you think about it. Well, I decided to learn the hard way. Remember these that I wanted to buy for the kitchen cabinet drawers? I bought them. When installed, all 8 of them broke :(

The good thing is that I regained my faith in an otherwise diminishing customer service industry. Anthropologie seriously rocks when it comes to hassle-free, no nonsense returns. They didn't bother having me send back the broken pieces and immediately credited my account. The packing slip also contains a free return slip. And, the people you talk to on the phone are super nice and accommodating. I will definitely be purchasing things from them in the future. I just wish it could be their fabulous (and expensive) furniture!

We had the holes drilled, so we were stuck with a 2 holed handle. Luckily, I like the old standard cup pull accompanied with a simple knob :

Hopefully we'll receive them this week. It is REALLY hard to open drawers without a handle!

White With Kids?

We desperately need a new couch but don't want to spend too much money with my ever-changing decor and recent depletion of funds on this project. I came across this awesome sale on WestElm.com and can't pass it up. $299 for a couch? Thats cheaper than anywhere else I can imagine and husband won't mind too much when I want a different one in a few years :)

I am rationalizing the white color by buying extra slipcovers for the sale price of $40 each. I figure I can get a few good uses with washes on each.

Then I was catching up on my blog reading over at Pure Home Style and can't agree more with Lauren's philosophy:

"However, (and here's my little white bedding arguement/ rant: Some people say that white bedding isn't practical when you have dogs & kids & I couldn't disagree more. You see, I want to know when there's something dirty on my bed, not camoflauge it. I'm not saying that you have to have white bedding if you have dogs/ kids, only that if you do want it, it's great for germaphobes and people like me who don't mind washing the bedding frequently... "

What are your thoughts? How do you deal with stains? Do you prefer out of sight out of mind?

On a side note - I'm bummed that the Armchairs are already sold out because I wanted to copy this look found in House Beautiful's October issue. (We all know I DO NOT need anymore chairs :)

We knocked down the wall between the living room and kitchen

AFTER

We eliminated the creepy closet, added built ins on either side of the fireplace, exposed and

re-pointed the brick

We exposed the original beams in the ceiling

The beams are still my favorite feature. The only problem with it is that you can't have recessed lighting. Tracks are one of the only options and I don't think they look so bad. We butted up dark tracks against the dark beam and they blend very well.

We're still deciding on furniture placement and unpacking boxes. Hopefully I can show you a lived in look in a few weeks/months :)

I'm Back!

Sorry for the delayed posts folks. It turns out that moving, not to mention unpacking, with a baby is near impossible. And then you factor in the wait time to set up internet and TV....ugh.

To be honest, all the hassles with trying to get our contractors to do the finishing details has left a bad taste in my mouth. What began as an exciting new project has left me just wanting it done, no matter what it looks like. The bones of the house gave us many challenges throughout the renovation and I am resigned to the fact that the end result is not perfect. Luckily, we approached this renovation knowing that it was never going to be our dream home so I don't feel like we failed. It was quite a learning experience. I am not sure if I'll ever be ready to tackle a total gut job again, but like running a marathon and child birth - both of which I've almost done - I know I'll find myself ready for it again after a few weeks.

I'll hold back from pointing out all the little problems for now. Maybe I'll do a post on "Lessons Learned As A Newbie Renovator".
